A Golfer’s Paradise

Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club

For those who love combining golf with travel, Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club is a hidden gem well worth the journey. Nestled in the beautiful County Cavan, Ireland, this resort offers a world-class golfing experience in a breathtaking setting, just two hours from either Dublin or Belfast Airport.

A Prestigious Golfing Destination

Slieve Russell is no ordinary resort—it proudly holds the title of PGA National Ireland, making it one of only ten PGA National resorts in the world. As well as hosting its acclaimed 18-hole championship course, the resort also features a 9-hole PGA National Academy Course, offering something for golfers of all skill levels. Designed by renowned Irish golf architect Patrick Merrigan, the par-72 championship course stretches over 7,000 yards from the back tees. Firmly established as one of Ireland’s top 10 parkland courses, it is a must-play for any serious golfer. The course beautifully weaves through the rolling landscape of drumlins and lakes, making each hole both scenic and challenging. The greens are notoriously tricky, offering a true test of accuracy and approach play.

Tournament History

Slieve Russell has hosted several major tournaments, including two European Tour events and the Irish PGA Championship. The resort also stages an annual PGA Pro-Am tournament, which boasts the largest prize fund for a Pro-Am in Ireland at €1.2 million. For those who relish the chance to play on a course with serious tournament pedigree, Slieve Russell is a dream come true.

Unbeatable Value

Despite its prestige and world-class design, playing at Slieve Russell is surprisingly affordable. During peak season in September, golfers can find twilight and early bird specials starting at just £45 (€51.50). Prime time slots are only marginally higher at £52 (€60). Given the immaculate greens, manicured fairways, and stunning setting, it’s incredible value for the quality you get.

The quaint pro shop is a treasure trove for golfers, offering equipment and friendly advice to make sure you’re well-prepared for the round.

Luxurious Accommodation

If you’re planning a multi-day golf getaway, staying on site is a must. The Slieve Russell Hotel is a luxurious four-star resort featuring over 200 rooms, designed in a modern yet elegant style. The breathtaking entrance and stunning grounds make an immediate impression, ensuring your stay is as memorable as the golf itself.

The Lakeland Challenge: A Must for Competitive Golfers

I was fortunate enough to experience the Lakeland Challenge, a thrilling two-day competition that attracts both members and visitors. The competition includes a male and female Stableford format, along with a gross competition, making it accessible to a wide range of players. The first day of the challenge takes place at Slieve Russell, while day two takes competitors to the stunning Faldo Course at Lough Erne. Played in June, it’s the perfect summer challenge for golfers looking to test their skills against some of the best parkland courses in Ireland.
