Nullarbor Links: The World’s Longest Course

Nestled across Australia’s sprawling outback, Nullarbor Links claims the title of the world’s longest golf course, stretching an impressive 1,365 kilometres across the states of South and Western Australia. This unique course takes golfers on an unforgettable journey across the Nullarbor Plain, combining 18 holes, vast desert landscapes, and quintessential outback towns. From the coastal town of Ceduna in South Australia to the charming town of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, Nullarbor Links invites golfers not just to play a round but to embark on a cross-country adventure unlike any other.

The course was put together to promote tourism through the Nullarbor Plain and to offer a unique experience for avid golfers and adventurers. Inaugurated in 2009, it provides golfers with a travel experience that provides a twist to the traditional 18-hole format. Each hole is in a different town or roadhouse, stretching across some of Australia’s most remote regions. As players travel from one location to the next, they encounter rich Australian landscapes, from red sand dunes to limestone cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, blending natural beauty with a challenging and unorthodox game of golf. Depending on the way you travel, the course starts in the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie, and winds across to coastal Ceduna in Southern Australia.

Challenges on the Links

Nullarbor Links is no ordinary golf course. Players are required to drive hundreds of kilometres between holes, which means a round can take days or weeks to complete. Each hole is designed with a unique landscape and challenge that reflects the environment. The holes are set up with tees and greens that use artificial grass, with the natural land left untouched in between. While some holes are set against the backdrop of small outback towns, others are located on rugged, isolated stretches of land where kangaroos and emus might wander by.

Weather on the Nullarbor Plain can also pose a challenge, as golfers face harsh sunlight, strong winds, and fluctuating temperatures. Even seasoned golfers will find the course’s mix of wide-open spaces, unexpected wildlife, and variable terrains a unique challenge.

Highlights Along the Course

Each hole along Nullarbor Links tells a story, adding to the overall experience. The 5th hole at Nundroo, for example, is near one of Australia’s best-kept secrets, Fowlers Bay, where players can enjoy pristine beaches. It is named Dingo’s Den, after the dingoes that can be found in the area. The 18th hole is named after CY O’Connor, the engineer that designed the Mundaring to Kalgoorlie pipeline that supplies water to this day.

Golf and Adventure Combined

Nullarbor Links is more than just a test of skill, it’s an exploration of Australia’s heartland and a unique travel experience. Each stop encourages travellers to encounter something new. It’s this fusion of sport and travel that makes Nullarbor Links an enticing adventure for those looking to explore Australia’s vast, open landscapes in an unconventional way.

Whether you’re a dedicated golfer or simply an adventurer seeking the thrill of the Australian outback, Nullarbor Links offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience, making every stroke as memorable as the vast landscape it spans.

Its selection for the Olympics speaks volumes about the course’s design, difficulty, and suitability for high-profile international tournaments.

The course’s layout rewards precision over power, with narrow fairways and tricky approaches demanding focus and skill. The finishing stretch is particularly nerve-wracking, with water coming into play on holes 15, 16, and the signature 18th—a par-4 that requires a nerve-testing approach shot over water to a well-guarded green. It’s a hole that has decided many tournaments, and it remains one of the most dramatic finishing holes in golf.

For those looking for a slightly less intense experience, Le Golf National also offers the Aigle Course (Eagle Course), which is more forgiving while still offering plenty of challenges.

More Than Just a Golf Course

Beyond golf, the proximity to Paris makes Le Golf National a fantastic destination for those looking to combine a golf trip with a cultural getaway. A day exploring the sights of Paris—whether it’s the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, or a stroll along the Seine—provides the perfect contrast to a round on the Albatros Course.

This marked a significant milestone, not just for the club, but for the sport of golf in Germany. The Special Olympics World Games, held every four years, bring together athletes with intellectual disabilities from across the globe to compete at the highest level.

True to the links-style courses of Scotland and Ireland, it features large, deep bunkers, wide fairways that roll and dip with the natural landscape, and greens that require precise shot-making.

Faldo’s design focuses on strategy and shot placement, making it a thinking golfer’s course. Long hitters may be tempted to go for the big drive, but the course rewards those who can play smart, particularly with the challenging approaches to the greens. The course’s signature hole, the 7th, is a dramatic par 4 that plays downhill to a green protected by bunkers and water. It’s as nerve-wracking as it is beautiful, and mastering it is a badge of honor.

Experience the Magic of Waterville Golf Links

A True Irish Gem

If you’re looking for a golf experience steeped in tradition, beauty, and a dash of challenge, then Waterville Golf Links in Ireland is calling your name. Nestled on the Ring of Kerry along Ireland’s picturesque southwest coast, this iconic links course is where golfing dreams meet breathtaking scenery. With its history, wild coastal landscape, and the honor of hosting some unique tournaments like the Father & Son and Father & Daughter events, Waterville has earned its reputation as one of the best golfing destinations in the world.

A Historic and Iconic Links Course

Waterville’s story begins in the late 1800s, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland. It started as a humble nine-hole course, but over the decades, it has grown into a world-renowned 18-hole links course. Its modern incarnation owes much of its magic to the legendary course designer Eddie Hackett and later, an upgrade by the revered Tom Fazio. Their combined vision created a masterpiece that plays beautifully while blending seamlessly with the rugged coastal environment.

Measuring a whopping 7,300 yards from the back tees, this par-72 course is as challenging as it is beautiful. The undulating fairways, unpredictable winds, and natural dunes present a classic links experience that will test even the most seasoned golfer. But don’t let the challenge scare you off—the experience of playing at Waterville is pure joy, especially with the wild Atlantic Ocean crashing in the background.

The Signature Holes

A round at Waterville will leave you with plenty of standout memories, but there are a few holes that take center stage. The 12th hole, nicknamed “Mass Hole,” is a visually stunning par 3 that is both dramatic and historic, named after a local tradition where villagers once held secret masses during times of religious persecution.

The 17th hole, known as “Mulcahy’s Peak,” is another gem. This par 3 plays over a valley of natural sand dunes with sweeping views of the ocean, offering one of the most beautiful vistas in all of golf.

But don’t let the scenery distract you—the winds and tricky lies will keep you on your toes throughout the round. With its perfectly manicured greens and natural landscape, Waterville provides a true links experience that will both challenge and reward golfers of all levels.

A Haven for Major Champions

Waterville Golf Links is no stranger to the pros. Over the years, it has been a favorite practice ground for Pádraig Harrington, Tiger Woods, and the late Payne Stewart, who loved to prepare here before the Open Championship. In fact, there’s a statue of Payne Stewart on the 18th hole, a tribute to his connection with the course and its community.

The Father & Son and Father & Daughter Tournaments

One of the most heartwarming and unique aspects of Waterville Golf Links is its rich tradition of family golf. Each year, the course hosts two signature events: the Father & Son and Father & Daughter golf tournaments. These events have become legendary, offering a competitive yet bonding experience in one of the most stunning settings in the world.

The Father & Son Tournament has been a fixture at Waterville since 1981. It attracts golfers from around the globe who come to compete in a week of pair stableford format while making lifelong memories with their dads. The camaraderie, the stories shared over dinner in the clubhouse, and the joy of playing together make this event incredibly special.

The Father & Daughter Tournament, a newer but equally celebrated event, offers a similar experience but with an extra dose of charm. The sight of fathers and daughters teeing it up together on one of Ireland’s greatest courses is something truly magical. It’s a unique chance to combine the competitive spirit of golf with the warmth of family bonds.

Both tournaments attract families from all corners of the world, and while the golf is undoubtedly serious, the atmosphere is relaxed and full of fun. It’s an unforgettable experience to walk the same fairways that have tested the best players in the world, but this time, with your family by your side.

Why Waterville Golf Links Should Be on Your Bucket List

It’s not just the course itself that makes Waterville a must-visit—it’s the whole experience. The remote location, the welcoming staff, the traditional Irish hospitality, and the sense of history make this a golfing pilgrimage that every golfer should undertake.

After a challenging day on the links, retreat to the cozy Waterville Golf Clubhouse, where you can enjoy some of the finest Irish cuisine, a well-earned pint of Guinness, and perhaps a few stories of legendary rounds gone by. The Butler Arms Hotel, nearby in the village of Waterville, offers a charming place to stay and soak in the local culture after a day on the course.

And let’s not forget the location itself. Set along the Ring of Kerry, one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world, Waterville is an ideal spot to combine a golfing adventure with a family vacation. Explore the nearby Skellig Islands, wander the rugged coastline, or visit charming Irish villages—the perfect way to round out your trip.

Conclusion: Play at Waterville, Create Memories for Life

Whether you’re chasing birdies or simply looking to create lasting memories with loved ones, Waterville Golf Links delivers an experience like no other. The course is a challenging, breathtakingly beautiful masterpiece, and the chance to participate in events like the Father& Son or Father & Daughter tournaments only adds to its appeal. Brocket Hall itself is a Georgian manor that sits at the heart of a sprawling estate. Previously home to two British Prime Ministers, it now consists of a prestigious golf club where you can play while soaking in the rich heritage.

Brocket Hall Golf Club

What’s better than one amazing course? Two! Brocket Hall Golf Club boasts two fantastic 18-hole courses: the Melbourne Course and the Palmerston Course. Each has its own character, so there’s something for every type of golfer.

The Melbourne Course: If you love open fairways and scenic views, the Melbourne Course is for you. The River Lea winds through the course, offering some exciting water hazards. The signature moment? The famous 18th hole where you cross the river on a small barge to get to the green (or attempt to fish your ball out of the water)!

The Palmerston Course: For those who enjoy a more challenging and technical game, the Palmerston Course delivers. The course is surrounded by trees and has tighter fairways, demanding accuracy and smart play. It’s beautiful and will keep you on your toes!

Green fees vary between season and time of day, but typically prices range from £115 to £155 per round, which you can see here

After you’ve wrapped up your round, the clubhouse is the perfect spot to kick back. Grab a drink, sit on the terrace, and take in the views over the 18th hole. If you’re hungry, the food here is top-notch, with everything from light snacks to more gourmet dishes.

If you’re looking to turn your day of golf into a weekend of luxury, Brocket Hall has got you covered. Stay at Melbourne Lodge, which offers classic rooms with views over the courses. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to play both courses over a couple of days or just relax and soak up the atmosphere.

Even if not everyone in your group is obsessed with golf, there’s plenty to enjoy at Brocket Hall. The estate is massive and perfect for taking a relaxing stroll or enjoying some quiet time by the river. There’s also the Auberge du Lac, a fine dining restaurant where you can treat yourself to some seriously good food. So, whether you’re a foodie, a golfer, or both, there’s something here for everyone.

Just don’t forget to bring your camera, the barge ride across the 18th hole is Instagram gold!
